Turkey drops war crimes probe of Israel

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Turkish prosecutors dropped a war crimes investigation against Israel over its Gaza military operation.

Turkey quit the probe, according to Turkish reports, after its Justice Ministry denied prosecutors permission to charge Israeli leaders with crimes against humanity and genocide following the monthlong operation that began in late December.

Turkish law allows officials from outside the country to be tried for war crimes with permission from the Justice Ministry.

The investigation was opened in February following a complaint by the human rights association Mazlum-Der, which accused Israel of carrying out "direct attacks on civilians with the aim of annihilating them," the Jerusalem Post reported.
