WASHINGTON (JTA) — Forty people marched in Tel Aviv to protest two controversial proposed laws.

The marchers walked with their mouths taped shut to demonstrate their opposition to the Nakba and loyalty laws, Ynet reported.

The group carried signs reading "Be afraid," "Nakba law — law of fear,"and "Loyalty law or democracy."

The Nakba law would make it illegal to observe May 15, the day Israel gained its independence, as a day of mourning. Israeli Arabs and Palestinians call the day the Nakba, or catastrophe.

The loyalty law would deny citizenship to anyone who refused to pledge their allegiance to the State of Israel.
