WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Anti-Defamation League urged Senate Judiciary Committee members to carefully examine the judicial philosophies of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.
In a letter to Sens. Pat Leahy (D-Vt.) and Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), the ADL asked the committee to carefully evaluate how Sotomayor might fare as an associate justice of the high court. The letter outlined several areas of concern in the realm of civil liberties and stressed the importance of the Senate’s role.
“In ADL’s view, the Senate’s role in the nomination process is equally as important as the President’s responsibility to nominate,” several ADL leaders said in the letter. “We hope this submission of issues of concern to us will be of assistance to the Committee as it undertakes its evaluation of Judge Sotomayor.”
