WASHINGTON (JTA) — A Jewish umbrella group helped organize a terrorism seminar for over 200 New Jersey law enforcement and security professionals.
The event, "Domestic Terrorism Seminar for Law Enforcement and Security Professionals,” was co-sponsored by the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness; the Secure Community Network, the umbrella security organization for Jewish organizationa; and CiNet, a law enforcement training company.
An emphasis was the threat of "lone wolves," unattached to groups that might be under government scrutiny. A number of attacks in recent months that have targeted Jews have been carried out by such individuals.
"From the lone wolf to organized hate groups, the threat of domestic terrorism is a growing concern nationwide," said Richard L. Cañas, Director of the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness. "Law enforcement officers, and the public at large, need to have a greater understanding of the ideology, behavior and suspicious activities associated with these violent extremists.
The seminar was planned in response to recent domestic terrorist activity, including a thwarted plot to bomb several New Jersey synagogue and the fatal shooting at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
