JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was incommunicado and said to be in a sensitive security compound for nearly 12 hours.
Netanyahu’s official schedule Monday said he was on a "military tour" set to end in the afternoon, according to reports. But the prime minister was gone until about 9 p.m. and had to cancel a meeting scheduled with Israeli journalists.
The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement Monday afternoon saying that Netanyahu "has been at a defense facility in Israel since morning."
Rumors also circulated that Netanyahu had traveled to an Arab country with which Israel does not have diplomatic relations.
The Palestinian newspaper Al Manar reported Tuesday that Netanyahu met in an Arab country with officials of two Arab countries to discuss cooperating in the face of the Iranian nuclear threat.
Netanyahu is scheduled to meet Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Egypt next week.
