JERUSALEM (JTA) — An American woman and her 2-year-old son were rescued from a Palestinian village in the West Bank.

The woman allegedly was held against her will by an abusive husband for three years, Israel Radio reported Wednesday. The woman had met her husband in the United States. Their son is 2 years old.

Former Israeli combat soldiers contacted by the Ohio woman’s parents carried out Monday’s mission.

The Israeli army was not aware of the rescue operation, but the U.S. Consulate was told about the mission in advance, one of the rescuers told Israel Radio.

It is illegal for Israeli citizens to enter areas under control of the Palestinian Authority.
