EDMONTON, Alberta (JTA) — A nearly $1 million Canadian government grant will help the 6,000-member Edmonton Jewish community demolish and rebuild its community center.
The money comes from a job creation program that is part of the federal government’s plan to stimulate the economy.
The funds will help the Jewish Federation of Edmonton build a new facility that is expected to include a gym, aerobics studio, dance center, martial arts studio, cardio center and weight room.
Federation Vice President Gillian Horwitz said the grant comes at a good time.
"The new community center will benefit the whole community," she told the Edmonton Journal.
The foundation is finalizing design, construction and financial details, she told the newspaper, and "when all these are in place – and we’re looking to the spring – we’ll move ahead with the project."
