JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Israeli businessman missing in Mexico may have been kidnapped.
The Israeli Consulate in Mexico is searching for Shai Golan, who according to Israeli media reports may have been kidnapped in Cancun.
Golan reportedly had been living in Mexico for several years and went missing last Friday. A business associate told Israel’s Channel 2 that Golan was involved in a power struggle pitting groups of Israelis marketing cosmetics in Mexican malls against Israeli organized crime.
Israel’s consul in Mexico, Itzik Erez, told Ynet that the information was passed along to the Mexico police, and they have been in touch with the Israeli police’s Los Angeles branch.
"We are trying to locate him and are not dealing with the question of whether he was kidnapped," Erez said. "We make the utmost effort to assist any Israeli who goes missing, regardless of whether or not he was kidnapped."
