Salita wins in return to ring

(JTA) — Orthodox Jewish boxer Dmitriy Salita was victorious in his return to the ring after being knocked out in a title bout.

Salita won an eight-round decision over Franklin Gonzalez in their light-welterweight fight at Oceana Hall in Brooklyn, N.Y., the venue of his first professional bout. Many in the crowd wore yarmulkes.

The Ukraine-born Salita promoted the event, which was called "Redemption."

Salita, a yeshiva student nicknamed the "Star of David," said the victory “feels good going into the Yontiff with this."

"I feel redeemed,” he said in the locker room following the bout, Tablet reported. “I’ve had a lot of anger for the last nine months.”

Amir Khan, a Muslim fighter, knocked out Salita last December in the first round of their World Boxing Association light-welterweight title bout in England.
