(JTA) — An Argentine Jewish umbrella organization awarded its highest honor to the American Jewish Committee.
AJC received the AMIA Bicentennial Award Oct. 13 at a dinner attended by more than 800 people in the presence of Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, Cabinet ministers and other leading dignitaries.
AJC and AMIA signed a cooperative agreement in 1998. The groups have worked together to ensure the well-being of the local Jewish community and to enhance ties among Argentina, the United States and Israel.
AJC was honored for its "unparalleled role in advancing the cause of human rights and justice," such as its work on behalf of justice for the victims of the 1994 terrorist attack on the AMIA building in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people and wounded more than 300.
“Justice delayed is justice denied,” said AJC Executive Director David Harris in accepting the award. “You know it, we know it, President Fernandez de Kirchner knows it. I pledge to you on behalf of AJC, we will stand with you brother to brother, sister to sister, shoulder to shoulder until justice is served."
