JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Israeli team will leave for Haiti to assess Israeli aid programs in the aftermath of last winter’s devastating earthquake on the island.
The team from IsraAID — The Israel Forum for International Humanitarian Aid — is scheduled to leave Thursday night despite a cholera outbreak that has killed more than 200 and reached the outskirts of the capital city, Port-au-Prince.
IsraAID medical staff members on the ground have been attending United Nations meetings to discuss the effect of the cholera on its aid programs in the region.
IsraAID has had Israeli staff on the ground in Haiti since Jan. 16, four days after the earthquake. Its teams have provided services to thousands affected by the earthquake, including emergency medical treatment, primary family medical care, medical rehabilitation, informal education, food production, women empowerment and children safe-spaces programs.
From Haiti the team will travel to New Orleans to participate in the Jewish Federations of North America’s General Assembly in November.
