(JTA) — Israel’s Foreign Ministry summoned Egypt’s ambassador to explain a statement by Egypt’s prime minister suggesting that the peace agreement between the two countries could be renegotiated.
"The Camp David agreement is not a sacred thing," Prime Minister Essam Sharaf told Turkish television Thursday, "and is always open to discussion with what would benefit the region and the case of fair peace … and we could make a change if needed."
At the Friday meeting, the Foreign Ministry’s director-general, Rafi Barak, reportedly told the Egyptian ambassador, Yasser Reda, that the peace treaty should be maintained.
