JERUSALEM (JTA) — France’s Foreign Ministry summoned Israel’s ambassador over an Israeli airstrike on the Gaza Strip that injured the French consul and his family.
On Wednesday, French officials explained to Israel’s envoy in a meeting at the Foreign Ministry in Paris "how strongly we deplore the consequences of the raid," ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said.
The ministry a day earlier had confirmed that France’s consul to the Gaza Strip, Majdi Shakoura, his wife and 13-year-old daughter were wounded by flying glass, and that his wife suffered a miscarriage after Israel’s Air Force targeted a Hamas naval police base near their home early Monday morning in retaliation for a rocket fired from Gaza at southern Israel.
France’s ambassador inTel Aviv also complained to Israeli authorities.
Valero told reporters on Tuesday that "While remaining committed to Israel’s security, France had reminded Israel of the need to avoid all harm against civilians."
One Hamas member was killed and four were wounded in the attack.
No Palestinian group claimed responsibility for the rocket attack that preceded the Air Force strike.
