NEW YORK (JTA) — The U.N. Security Council issued a statement condemning the attack on an Israeli official in India.
In a statement released Thursday by the council’s rotating president, Kodjo Menan of Togo, council members "condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in New Delhi, India, aimed at Israel’s diplomatic personnel." The council also condemned an attempted attack the same day in Georgia.
On Feb. 13, a bomb destroyed the car in which the wife of an Israeli envoy in New Delhi was traveling, resulting in significant but not life-threatening injuries. The same day, a similar attack was attempted in the Georgian capital of Tblisi, but the bomb was defused.
Israel blamed Iran for the attacks, but Tehran denied involvement.
Israel’s U.N. ambassador, Ron Prosor, welcomed the council statement.
