JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel is bracing for possible mass pro-Palestinian marches on its borders.
Pro-Palestinian activists have called for a "global march to Jerusalem" from the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria on Friday coinciding with the annual "Land Day" protests held by Israeli Arabs.
"Our aim is to end the Zionist policies of apartheid, ethnic cleansing and Judaisation," organizers said in a web statement.
Israeli officials said Sunday they had no indications of any mass mobilization of demonstrators, but they said that Israel was prepared to repel any intrusion — with force if necessary — and had asked the Palestinian Authority, Egypt and Jordan to restrain protesters.
During similar demonstrations last year, anti-Israel activists surged across the Lebanon and Syria frontiers, drawing deadly gunfire from Israeli troops.
