(JTA) — J. Michael Whalen, a journalist with more than 20 years of industry experience, has been named editor of The Jewish Advocate in Boston.

Whalen, a Boston native, most recently worked as the editor of The Milton Times, a newspaper in Milton, Mass. His previous newspaper jobs includes stints at The Warren Group, where he was editor of Banker & Tradesman and The Commercial Record; Community Newspaper Company, where he edited The Pembroke Mariner and The Kingston Mariner; and The Quincy Sun, where he served as assistant editor.

Steve Maas, who has served as editor of The Jewish Advocate for the past three years, said he knows he’s leaving the paper in good hands.

“Mike is a veteran journalist who understands how to cover a community in an insightful and balanced fashion,” Maas said. “Over the past couple of weeks we have had the opportunity to make a smooth transition.”
