JERUSALEM (JTA) — A Palestinian taxi driver from eastern Jerusalem was shot in the leg while trying to run over an Israeli soldier.

The driver, a resident of the Jabel Mukaber neighborhood of eastern Jerusalem, reportedly tried to drive his taxi into a police station compound in eastern Jerusalem, hitting a supply car attempting to leave the station. When a Border Guard officer stationed at the gate approached the car to speak to the driver, he attempted to run over the guard.

Israel police officers opened fire on the taxi, wounding the Palestinian driver in the leg. The guard was also injured. Both men were taken to a Jerusalem hospital.

Police believe the incident was nationalistically motivated; authories said they knew the driver.

"I lost my mind," the driver reportedly told police after the incident. "I wanted to drive into the station."
