Rabbi Dov Lipman, who won a Knesset seat on Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid list last week, will be the first American-born Knesset member since Meir Kahane. But, as of today, Lipman is no longer an American. In order to be eligible for Israel’s Parliament, he denounced his U.S. citizenship.

From Lipman’s Facebook page:

Today, in a private and emotional moment at the United States Embassy, I renounced by United States Citizenship, enabling me to serve in the Israeli Knesset. I thank the United States of America for my 41 years of citizenship and for all it has done for my family and to help prepare me for election to the Knesset and for my remarkable new status – exclusively Israeli- which feels so right
