(JTA) — A former Auschwitz death camp guard living in Germany was indicted as an accessory to 10,500 murders.
Hans Lipschis was indicted Sept. 26 by German prosecutors, the German news service DPA reported.
Lipschis, 93, was stripped of his United States citizenship and deported in 1982 for not disclosing his Nazi past.
He was arrested in Germany in May. Lipschis has said he was a cook at the death camp.
Prosecutors have asked the state court at Ellwangen, where Lipschis lives, to take the case and set a trial date, according to DPA.
According to the indictment, Lipschis was a guard at Auschwitz between 1941 and 1943, during which time thousands of Jews arrived at the camp, many of whom were killed immediately in the gas chambers.
