(JTA) — Protesters gathered outside the office of a South Florida surgeon who was scheduled to perform a contested circumcision on a 4-year-old boy.
The demonstration was held Tuesday in Plantation, where Dr. Subhash Puranik reportedly was scheduled to perform the procedure on Chase Nebus-Hironimus.
Chase was born to Heather Hironimus and Dennis Nebus, who three years ago when making out a parenting plan as part of their separation agreed to the circumcision. Hironimus backed out of the surgery and Nebus took her to court. In May, a state appeals court upheld lower court rulings in favor of Nebus and the circumcision.
Neither Hironimus or Nebus are Jewish.
Hironimus reportedly refused to sign the papers to allow the surgery to go forward on Tuesday. It is not known if the surgery was performed as scheduled.
Nebus has called circumcision “just the normal thing to do.”
