(JTA) — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will face a runoff after failing to garner the majority needed to claim reelection outright.

Emanuel garnered the most votes in the five-way race on Tuesday, but did not reach the necessary 50 percent threshold to avoid the runoff.

He will face his closest competitor, Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia, in April.

Emanuel finished with 45.4 percent of the vote and Garcia had 33.9 percent. Voter turnout was 34 percent.

Emanuel, the former White House chief of staff for President Obama, spent about $16 million on the campaign.
