(JTA) — Three New York men were sentenced for violently attempting to coerce a man into granting his wife a religious divorce.
Avrohom Goldstein, Ariel Potash and Sholom Schuchat were sentenced Thursday in a federal court in New Jersey in connection to a 2013 incident in which they planned to use physical force to pressure a man to grant his wife a get, or religious writ of divorce.
An Orthodox woman cannot remarry without receiving a get from her husband. The women who are trapped in such marriages are calledagunot, or “chained women.”
The three men had previously pleaded guilty.
Goldstein was sentenced to 45 months in prison, Potash received a 14-month sentence and Schuchat was sentenced to time served, according to reports.
Several others involved in the scheme were sentenced to prison terms earlier this week.
