JERUSALEM (JTA) — Thousands of mourners attended the funeral of a wheelchair-using Palestinian man shot during clashes with Israeli troops.
Ibrahim Abu Thurayya, 29, was one of four Palestinians killed in clashes with Israeli troops on Friday, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. Two of the Palestinians were killed on the border with the Gaza and two were killed in the West Bank.
The Palestinians were protesting the announcement earlier this month that the United States would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Abu Thurayya’s funeral was held Saturday in Gaza. He had said he lost his legs in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza in 2008. He reportedly worked washing cars in Gaza to support his family since he lost his legs, the Palestinian Maan news agency reported.
Abu Thurayya was a well-known Palestinian activist who protested against Israel. Tributes to Abu Thurayya appeared on social media following the announcement of his death.
