A 100-man Overseas Study Mission of the nationwide United Jewish Appeal leaves tomorrow for a survey of refugee aid requirements in Europe and Israel. Their first stop will be Paris, where they will confer with officials of the Joint Distribution Committee on the Polish Government’s invitation to the JDC to set up aid programs for thousands of Jews being repatriated in Poland from Russia.
The JDC discussions will be the first order of business on the UJA mission’s intensive three-week, on -the-scene survey of sharply mounting Jewish refugee aid requirements in Europe and, most important, in Israel. Leaders of the mission include Edward M. M. Warburg, UJA honorary chairman; Morris W. Berinstein of Syracuse, UJA president; Dewey D. Stone and Sol Luckman, UJA national chairman; Herbert A. Friedman, UJA executive vice-chairman, and Fred Forman, vice-chairman of the UJA national campaign cabinet.
A full report of the findings of the study mission will be presented to the UJA annual national conference which opens in New York on December 14, and will weigh heavily in charting the Appeal’s 1958 campaign objectives. Heading the mission’s agenda will be its participation in the annual conference of the Joint Distribution Committee in Paris, opening on October 20, where the new developments in Poland will be a prime topic. From Paris, the UJA mission will go to Israel on October 24.
