An appeal for more aid for 150,000 Jews living in the area of Rumania stricken by drought, who face starvation this winter, was made through the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today by Bercu Feldman, a member of the All-Jewish Relief Committee.
Feldman said that the efforts of Rumanian Jewry to help their fellow countrymen in the drought area is insufficient, and large shipments of food from abroad are needed. Money is of little value in these districts, he stressed, adding that “we urgently need wheat, corn, vegetables, oil and potatoes.
He pointed out that the committee’s first concern is for the children in this area. Reporting that nurseries have been established in Jassy and Oradea, Feldman said the Jews appreciate the fact that the Soviet military authorities have supplied the beds needed in the nurseries. The nurseries are being supported by local Jews and the Joint Distribution Committee. A movement has been started throughout the country to have children in unaffected areas adopt school children in the stricken districts and to send them small parcels of food.
