18 Graduate from Training School for Jewish Social Work

Eighteen students received certificates at the graduation exercises of the Training School for Jewish Social Work in the auditorium of the Federation Building at 71 West 42nd street, New York, yesterday afternoon. Nine states were represented in the student body of the graduating class, New York State leading with six students. The Training School is a graduate school, and requires a Bachelor’s degree for admission to the full regular course. New York University with three graduates led the field as the former school of Training School students.

Dr. Abraham Flexner, who recently resigned as the director of General Education Board of Rockefeller Foundation was the principal speaker and his subject was “The Present Status of Professional Social Work.” Other speakers included Maurice J. Karpf, director of the school, Felix M. Warburg, chairman of the Executive Committee, Louis E. Kirstein of Boston, president of the school, who presented the certificates to the graduates.

Dr. Solomon Lowenstein, executive director of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies of New York extended a welcome to the students as members of their new profession. Announcement was made that nearly all of the students in the class already have secured positions with social service agencies, in various parts of the country. On Sunday evening members of the graduating class were guests at the home of Mr. Karpf. Yesterday, the alumni of the school came to New York to hold its annual meeting in the morning with Harold Silver of Philadelphia, president of the alumni, presiding.

Following the graduation exercises in the afternoon, the fourth class to enter the school were hosts to the graduating class at dinner.

Arthur Rossicham of Cleveland was the holder of the Fellowship awarded by the Cleveland Federation of Jewish Charities and Frederick J. Stern of Milwaukee, was the holder of the Fellowship awarded by the Detroit Jewish Welfare Federation.
