Twenty orange growers were arrested this week-end by Israel police following attempts to prevent the movement of two truckloads of citrus fruits by the Histadrut citrus growing and marketing cooperative.
The action was part of a strike against the government by orange growers who demand subsidies to make up for losses suffered in foreign markets as a result of competition abroad. The police have not prevented demonstrations, but have only acted when fruit has been destroyed or workers threatened.
