Carrying denunciatory placards and singing Zionist songs, a crowd, estimated at more than 3,000, picketed the British Consulate in the downtown financial district today, demanding that Britain “open the gates of Eretz Israel to a decimated people.” The picket line was led by a score of uniformed and bemedalled Jewish Legionnaires.
Cantor Mordecai Yardeni led the crowd in the chanting of the traditional Tisha B’Av “Kinnoth,” the Lamentations. When the chanting was concluded, Elias Ginzburg, a leader of the Jewish Legionnaires, addressed a plea to the British authorities to transfer “the remnants of European Jewry to Palestine.”
The pickets, with arms raised, took an oath, saying: “We solemnly swear that we shall not rest and will not spare ourselves until justice is done to the Jewish people.” After blowing the shofar, the demonstration dispersed singing the Star Spangled Banner and Hatikvah.
