The 3,000 members of the Karaite sect in Israel, now scattered through some 30 communities, have asked the Israel Government for a central location where they could establish a single united community.
The sect, which recognizes only the laws of the Torah and rejects Talmudic injunctions has a ban on marriages outside the group. With small communities dispersed across the country, it is difficult for young people to find appropriate marriage partners. The sect hopes to overcome this and other problems by building a common life in a single community.
