Atomic physicists from the four corners of the earth began arriving here today for the first International Conference on Nuclear Structure to be held in Israel. The parley opens at the Weizmann Institute of Science here Sunday.
The bulk of the largest national group, 37 scientists from the United States, are expected to arrive aboard a special plane provided by the U.S. Air Transport Command. They include physicists from the U.S. armed forces and from outstanding universities, including Princeton, Columbia and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Other Americans who will participate are researchers with Bell Laboratories, General Electric and the government atomic projects at Los Alamos and Cak Ridge.
Though the size and composition of the Soviet delegation has not been announced, the Soviet Embassy has formally informed the Weizmann Institute that the USSR will have a substantial group at the conference. Other Communist countries which are participating are Yugoslavia with six scientists, Poland with three and Rumania with two. India will be represented by two scientists, as will Japan, but no Arab will be present.
The French, with 23, are scheduled to be the largest delegation from Western Europe. This reflects the close cooperation between Israeli and French scientists in nuclear research, particularly in the development of a cheap process for the production of heavy water. Britain’s delegation will include 18 of her top physicists, including men connected with Oxford, Cambridge, Birmingham and Manchester Universities, the Imperial College and Harwell.
