The total number of Jewish immigrants to enter Canada from April 1, 1946, through December 31, 1953, was 38,200, the Canadian Jewish Congress revealed here today on the basis of a survey completed by its experts. This influx since the end of World War II has increased the Jewish population of the Dominion by 21 percent.
An analysis of immigrants on the basis of their country of birth revealed that in the post-war period the largest group of Jewish immigrants originated in Poland, followed by those from the United States and Britain. In the last two decades before the war broke out Polish Jews were also the largest single group of Jewish immigrants to Canada.
The total number of Jews now living in Montreal, largest city of Jewish residence in Canada, is now estimated at about 92, 000, CJC statisticians report. They say that all but a handful of the 8, 700 Jewish immigrants who came to Quebec province in the past two and a half years settled in Montreal.
