A Peace Now rally in the heart of Tel Aviv last night drew more than 40,000 Israelis who demanded that Premier Menachem Begin’s government resign.
Speakers castigated the government for providing subsidies to Jewish settlements on the West Bank while slum dwellers live in tents. The government was charged with neglecting housing, social welfare and security. It is not functioning and the only way out is for it to resign, they said.
One speaker observed that the demonstration would prove to Jews in Israel and the diaspora and to Israel’s friends the world over that there are Israelis who seek a different path from that taken by the Begin regime. The Israel they knew in the past still exists, he said.
