The 80th birthday of the Jewish Publication Society of America is being observed during Jewish Book Month, Nov. 15 through Dec. 15, in many cities across the United States. Founded in 1888, the Society has published more than 600 books for adults and children. They include the Bible and subjects in religion, philosophy and American Jewish history, as well as novels, poetry and juvenile books. In 1917, the JPS published the generally accepted Jewish translation of the Bible into English. A new translation was made in 1965 by a group of distinguished Jewish scholars.
Beginning in 1899 the JPS issued annually the American Jewish Yearbook, a project that it has shared with the American Jewish Committee since 1909. This year the JPS is publishing 12 books. It is a non-profit, community-owned publishing house.
