A group of 19 prominent German intellectuals issued an open letter calling on Chancellor Helmut Kohl to abandon plans for a monument in the heart of Berlin to Jews killed during the Holocaust. They said the large scale of the planned memorial would not create the “place of quiet mourning” the promoters envisioned. It also said the monument should also recall other groups persecuted by the Nazis, including Gypsies, gays and Soviet prisoners of war.
