A mixed commission of judicial and police officials, plus a representative of the Jewish Democratic Committee, is taking action in the rural districts of Transylvania to stamp out an alarming increase in anti-Semitic incidents, it was reported here today.

The commission, which is now operating in the Satu-Mare district, has replaced the gendarmerie in all villages where anti-Jewish outbreaks have occurred. In some of these hamlets, attacks on homes of Jews have become almost a daily occurrence, and in one village a Jew was shot, while many have been beaten.

It was announced today that police have arrested a gang of smugglers who robbed Jewish emigrants, whom they were guiding across the Rumanian-Hungarian border. The Jewish press reports that the gang had agents throughout Moldavia, who encouraged Jews to emigrate in order to rob them.

In the Transylvanian town of Medias, the police have arrested Radu Leonte, its former police chief, who terrorized the Jewish population during the Iron Guard regime. Later, Leonte headed a gang of bandits who were responsible for a number of crimes against Jews.
