A rabbi charged with smuggling drugs into a U.S. federal prison where he served as chaplain to Jewish inmates pleaded guilty Tuesday to a lesser charge. Eli Gottesman, 74, could have been sentenced to as much as 20 years and a $250,000 fine. Instead, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges, which could put him behind bars for less than a year. Sentencing was set for Jan. 5.
