Abraham Herman, president of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society, and John L. Bernstein, former president, leave April 28 on the S. S. Rex for an extended tour of Europe, including Russia and Palestine. A farewell was given them by the board of directors at a meeting last night at the society’s headquarters, 425 Lafayette street.
The purposes of the tour, it was announced, will include study of the society’s work in Europe, with special attention directed to the German Jewish refugee situation. Russia will be visited to ascertain the feasibility of establishing HIAS offices there. The trip to Palestine will be for the purpose of determining what services HIAS can render in connection with immigration into that country of Jews from Germany and Eastern Europe.
While abroad Herman and Bernstein will attend the annual conference at Paris of the Hicem Council, comprising representatives of HIAS, the Jewish Colonization Association (ICA) and the United Jewish Emigration Committee (Emikdirect). They will be accompanied on the trip by their wives.
