The Jewish Agency asked the Palestine Government in a memorandum today to provide transportation for 16 Palestine-bound Jewish refugees aboard the Italian steamship Rodi which was captured by a British warship and taken to Malta.
Many Jewish refugees with Palestine certificates who had been in Italy fled to Greece, whence they have been trying to reach Palestine by train. The Agency is attempting to obtain for them the necessary transit visas through Turkey and Syria.
Several Italian Jews, including four Hebrew University professors, were released by the authorities after having been under detention since Italy’s entrance into the war.
The position of American Jews in Palestine in the light of the war was discussed last night at a meeting in Tel Aviv attended by the heads of 175 American Jewish families. A committee was appointed to take up with the American Consul questions of evacuation of Americans inside or outside Palestine. Consular forms indicating their desires were filled out by participants in the meeting.
