The long-expected strike of car-drivers throughout Palestine will start on August 6th., according to a decision which the Union of motor-car drivers adopted here to-night.
The decision to declare a strike was adopted after the Union had considered a letter from the Government, in which the Government expressed its readiness to reduce the licence fees for motor-car owners, but not other taxes.
The strike will affect 4,000 families, both Jewish and Arab, and will bring about a complete stoppage of vehicular traffic all over the country. Jewish life, which depends largely on communication between the various centres, will be particularly affected.
The demands which the car-drivers’ Union put before the Government were that the Government should reduce the import duty on benzine, cancel the licence fees and make the traffic regulations milder. The strike was originally called for June 30th., but was postponed by the action of the Government in suspending for the time being the decision to charge the car-drivers licence fees.
