Foreign Minister Yigal Allon declared yesterday that Israel would agree to no conditions nor pay any price for a Syrian agreement to renew the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) on the Golan Heights which expires May 30. Briefing the Cabinet on the latest political developments, Allon said that Israel would not submit to any resolutions in the UN Security Council inimical to its interests as the price for extending UNDOF.
Officials here seem fairly confident that the UNDOF mandate will be renewed, if only because Syria is so heavily involved in the Lebanese crisis. But no one will make any hard prediction because of Syria’s record of unpredictability.
Speaking on a related subject, Allon told the Cabinet that if Israel was suspended or ousted from the UN General Assembly it would react by suspending UN activities in the Middle East. He did not elaborate. He noted, however, that an increasing number of UN member states have gone on record in opposition to any move to suspend Israel.
