The decisions of the Allotment Committee, named to distribute the funds raised above the initial agreed amount by the 1943 United Jewish Appeal were announced today by Dr. Jonah B. Wise, chairman of the fund-raising committee of the Joint Distribution Committee and by Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal.
After studying the needs of the J.D.C. and U.P.A., and taking into account the amount of money available for distribution, which it felt was not adequate for the needs of either organization, the Allotment Committee adopted a formula calling for the division of the first $6,400,000 raised (above the original $9,100,000) as follows: $3,520,000 (55%) to the Joint Distribution Committee, and $2,880,000 (45%) to the United Palestine Appeal. The National Refugee Service, the third constituent agency, made no application to the Allotment Committee, for funds to supplement the $1,500,000 is received on the basis of the campaign agreement. The next $300,000 received by the U.J.A. is to go to the United Palestine Appeal for payments on the deficit of the Jewish Agency for Palestine. The additional sums accruing to the United Jewish Appeal from the nationwide campaign will be distributed at a subsequent meeting of the Allotment Committee.
The Allotment Committee, composed of Joel Gross, of Newark, chairman; I. Edwin Goldwasser and Isaac H. Levy, for the J.D.C., and Charles J. Rosenbloom and Dr. Abba Hillel Silver for the U.P.A., with Mr. Gross, Louis Caplan of Pittsburgh and Edwin J. Schanfarber of Columbus, representing the Jewish communities at large, voted on the distribution of all funds above the sum of $9,100,000 which had been previously divided among the agencies in accordance with the provisions of the contract for the unified campaign.
