Minister of Labor Yosef Almogi will call for a one-year moratorium on strikes to prevent further deterioration of the nation’s labor and economic situation, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned today. He will also, it was learned, ask for a ban on importation of luxury items, a reduction in profits, and price stability, especially for essential goods to counteract the genuine fear that some employers might try to take economic advantage of a strike moratorium. In such cases. a special committee would have the power to authorize strikes, under the Almogi plan. The Labor Minister is known to oppose the outright prohibition of strikes, which he considers both undemocratic and ineffective. But he will urge Histadrut and the Knesset to endorse his moratorium proposal to bring Israel’s style of living more into line with wartime conditions. His aim is to create an atmosphere in which the populace would frown on labor strikes.
