American Jewish Conference Cancels Emergency Session; Issues Explanatory Statement

The American Jewish Conference today announced at its Interim Committee has decided to cancel an emergency session called for March 21 in New York to make a final decision on the fate of the organization. A statement issued by the Conference says that the Interim Committee voted to cancel ##e emergency session after reviewing recent developments in Palestine and Europe ##d after recording its conviction that “the emergency situation which called the conference into being continues.”

The resolution which was adopted reads:

“1. The Interim Committee, having reviewed the recent Jewish developments in Palestine and Europe, records its conviction that the emergency situation which called the Conference into being continues. The dangers of jeopardizing the equitable battlement of the Palestine issue, the deteriorating position of the Jewish DP’s, ##e need for completing negotiations designed to secure adequate safeguards for the Jewish people in peace treaties with former enemy countries and to assure restitution of confiscated property, make it imperative to continue such activities of the conference.

“The Interim Committee, therefore, in order the better to further these vital activities, and in accordance with the mandate of the December 1947 session of the conference in Chicago with respect to its duration, cancels the emergency session of the American Jewish Conference called for the City of New York on March 21, 1948.

“2. In view of the difficulties encountered in the matter of establishing permanent American Jewish Assembly as envisaged at the Chicago session, the Interim Committee decided that the work of the Preparatory Commission and its sub-committees is to be suspended.”
