Anglo-jewish Association Decides to Participate in London Conference on Palestine

The annual meeting of the Anglo-Jewish Association today authorized its leaders to participate in the Conference on Palestine or in any other discussions on Palestine’s future which may take place in London.

The meeting adopted a resolution expressing regret that the Jewish Agency had rejected participation in the London parley. Another resolution condemned “the wicked and senseless outrages” in Palestine, stating that the activities of the extremists there were distressing to all Jews, and particularly to the British Jews.

The decision of the Anglo-Jewish Association was taken while the British Government announced the completion of technical preparations for opening of the conference at St. James Palace. At least four signs reading “Jewish delegation” were posted on the bulletin boards there, and a British official explained that “we are prepared for all eventualities because the situation is fluid.” He indicated that the conference might drag on for a considerable time.

ZIONIST LEADERS ARRIVE IN LONDON FOR TALKS WITH BRITAIN

David Hen Gurion, chairman of the World Zionist executive, and Dr. Moshe Sneh, a member of the executive, arrived today. They will be joined tomorrow by Moshe Shertok, head of the executive’s political department. Together with other members of the executive now in London they will conduct informal talks with representatives of the government while the official conference will take place in the absence of Zionist leaders.

British sources today reported that no formal agenda has been prepared for the conference, but there will be two proposals before the participants: the “federalization plan”of the British Government which provides for the establishment of Jewish and Arab provinces in Palestine under a central administration, and which was denounced by both Arabs and Jews, and the Arab counter-plan demanding that Palestine be proclaimed an independent Arab state.

(A report from Cairo stated that the delegation of the Palestine Higher Arab Committee which is due to arrive in London this week, held a meeting today with the ex-Mufti of Jerusalem, at which it was decided to demand complete independence for Palestine and to refuse to discuss any other proposals at the London talks.)

Dr. Neumann denied that American Zionists are anti-British. However, he declared that in recent years the friendship between American Zionists and Britain has gradually dissipated due to the British anti-Zionist policies, Cordial relations, he stated, could be resumed if Britain would return to the underlying principles of the right of Jewish national existence. Otherwise, he pointed out, discussions between Zionist leaders and the British Government mean only “milling about in a sterile vacuum.”

Expressing the hope that a turning point in British-Jewish relations is near, Dr. Neumann said that the Jewish Agency would not enter the Palestine Conference through the back door. He charged that besides a policy of “ruling Palestine with an iron rod” Britain has no plan for establishing normal life in Palestine. Stressing the growth of moderate sentiments in Arab circles, he indirectly charged the British Government with Keeping Jews and Arabs divided.
