More than 800 Hadassah leaders from all sections of the United States today observed the 21st anniversary of Youth Aliyah, worldwide child rescue and resettlement agency, at a meeting in the grand ballroom of the Hotel Pierre. Hadassah is the American agency of Youth Aliyah, which since its inception in 1934 has resettled in Israel more than 70,000 homeless and orphaned Jewish children from every part of the globe.
Speakers at the meeting included Dr. Giora Josephthal, treasurer of the Jewish Agency, Miss Marguerite Pohek, Social Affairs Officer of the United Nations, and Mrs. Zena Harman, Social Affairs Adviser to the Israel delegation to the United Nations. Dr. Miriam Freund, Hadassah chairman for Youth Aliyah, presided.
In a special ceremony Mrs. Bertha Levin, of Baltimore, a sister of the late Henrietta Szold, founder of Hadassah and one of the prime movers in the establishment of Youth Aliyah, was presented with an “IMA” certificate. “IMA” is the Hebrew equivalent of “mother.” In a message to the meeting, Representative Emanuel Celler charged that Secretary of State John Foster Dulles was using the controversial Gaza incident as “a further excuse” to delay United States guarantees of Israel’s present borders.
