Anti-Semitic mambers of the Rumanian judiciary are sabotaging restitution laws through various legal subterfuges and strategems, a Jewish delegation charged today during a conference with Minister of Justice Lucretiu Patrascanu.
The delegation accused several judges of misinterpreting the law covering return of property sold under duress during the Antonescu regime. It also cited the case of judges in the town of Galatz who arbitrarily ruled that furniture was excluded from the terms of the restitution law. In the Brashov district, the courts refused to accept suits against the pro-Nazi “German Ethic Group,” on the ground that it was not a fascist organization in the meaning of the law.
Patrascanu promised that he would investigate the delegation’s charges and take action where the law had been flouted.
