The first attempt to attack Zionism at the World Trade Union Conference being held here was made today, when the Arab delegate from Palestine, Hana Asfour, addressed the audience on the position of Arab labor.
Claiming that he spoke for 50,000 Palestinian Arab workers, the delegate said that “Palestine suffers from British imperialism and Zionism.” As he launched into an attack on Zionism, he was stopped by the chairman because he had exceeded his time limit.
The suggestion that a solution of the Palestine problem be postponed until such time as it can be established whether there will be a large or a small Jewish immigration into Palestine is made by General Edward L. Spears, a British military leader, in an article published in the London Daily Telegraph.
Pointing out that unlimited Jewish immigration or the establishment of a Jewish State would inevitably lead to armed Arab resistance, Gen. Spears argues that, after the defeat of Germany, there may not be the pressure of large numbers of Jews wishing to emigrate to Palestine, and some of those now there may wish to return to their homelands, when security has been established. “It would be folly to risk a first class crisis over a question that may never arise,” Gen. Spears concludes, referring to the demands for a Jewish State.
