Eleven more Jews have been brutally murdered by Moslem attackers in the most recent outbreak, bringing the semi-official death toll as a result of the massacres of the last ten days to thirty-eight, of whom thirty-four were Jews, it was ascertained today. Private estimates place the number slain at more than 100 and those wounded at upwards of 400.
The eleven new killings occurred at Ain Beida, ten miles south of here. Stores were pillaged and burned before Senegalese troops, under French officers, re-established order. Children were among the victims, all of whom were mutilated and their throats slashed.
Meanwhile, calm was restored here and authorities began to take stock of the situation.
A conservative estimate of the damage, it was officially announced, is more than $3,000,000, all in the Jewish quarter.
Some 144 Arab rioters, accused of being ringleaders in organizing the attacks on the Jewish quarter, are in jail here and will be placed on trial charged with the brutal killings of the Jews
Martial law has been lifted, authorities deeming the situation well enough in hand to relax the iron military grip and the curfew law, which had confined citizens to their homes between darkness and dawn, has also been abrogated.
Civil authorities are once again in power, but heavy troop detachments are still stationed here, ready to meet any attempt to renew the anti-Jewish attacks.
