U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar met with Yasir Arafat for 90 minutes here Sunday.
The Palestine Liberation Organization chairman said later that he had thanked Perez de Cuellar “for what he is doing for our people.”
He was believed to be referring to the special emissary dispatched by the secretary-general last month to assess the situation of Palestinians in Israel and the administered territories after the recent upsurge of violence.
The report of the envoy, Jean-Claude Aime, was a subject of discussion at the meeting.
The PLO leader also said they discussed ways to protect Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip from Israeli security forces.
