More than 500 Detroit Jews, meeting in conference last night, at Congregation Emanuel, endorsed a proposal of Rabbi Aaron M. Ashinsky to ask every Detroit Jew to pay $1 per head to the Vaad Hakashruth, the fund to be devoted to supervision guaranteeing that the Jewish dietary laws will be observed.
The conference was called as a result of differences that have arisen between the Vaad Hakashruth and the kosher butchers over problems of supervision. The butchers, pressed by a price war among themselves, refused to pay for mashgichim (supervisors), and the decision of the conference is intended to solve this problem. In addition to the income from the voluntary taxes, which are to be raised in a campaign and renewed annually at Rosh Hashonah sales of synagogue tickets, kashruth cards will be exchanged for kosher butcher shop cards monthly and a nominal charge made for each card, thus increasing the revenue.
